Auburndale:
Peebles BBQ in Auburndale. It is a classic family owned Cracker dive. Zagats would rate it high on atmosphere alone,Pit in the restaurant, open air, no A/C....Its a piece of BBQ culture.
Boca Raton:
Shorty's - 441 and Clint Moore - Shorty's opened in 1951 in South Miami. This is the same menu, same recipes. Great brisket, although more pot roast flavor than smoked, but perfectly cooked. Baby Back ribs were good, Spares were Chinese style without the sauce. Chicken was okay, Pulled Pork tasted like baked beans. Homemade cole slaw is great.

Smokey Bones has opened a joint on 441 and Palmetto Park Road. Same great stuff as their other locations.

Bonita Springs:
Porky's Last Stand, exit 18 of I-75, go west a few miles and it on right in front of a large shopping center. It has it's days, trying to become a small chain, but mos to the time the pulled pork is good. Full liquor bar and tv's for weekend sporting events.

Go north on US41 to Bonita Springs and take a right on Bonita Beach Rd, about 1/2 mile on left is Porky's Last Stand. Acceptable Q and atmosphere.

Brandon:
There is a BBQ joint in Brandon Florida off of Hwy 60 by the driver's license office and Aaron's sale's and lease ownership store. It's called First Choice BAR-B-Q. On any day of the week you will find a line out the door and then some at lunch time this place is great. The ribs melt in your mouth the pork platter is out of this world the baked beans are delicious and everything else too.

You might want to try First Choice Southern Bar-B-Que, 10113 Adamo Dr E., Brandon, Fl (813-832-3584) That's actually Hwy 60 E. of Tampa. Real wood fire cooked meat. Ribs and pulled pork galore. Sauce served separately on the table.

Dania Beach:
Charlie's Bar-B-Q, 1302 S. Federal Highway, Dania Beach. Unlike most South Florida BBQ joints, Charlie's has a way with beef brisket, Texas-style. It's fork tender.
Ft. Lauderdale:
Tom Jenkins Barbecue. 1236 S. Federal Hwy. Fort Lauderdale, 954-522-5046. You can smell the smoke 6 blocks away. No boiled ribs here.

You've got to add to the list of bbq spots a place called "The Georgia Pig"...it's located in Ft. Lauderdale and been in business since 1953, definitely a local's hangout for the best Georgia BBQ in South Florida.
Georgia Pig, 1285 SW 40th Ave. (State Road 7), Fort Lauderdale. It has one of the best hand-chopped pork BBQ sandwiches you'll ever eat. Order the platter: crispy fries and cole slaw.

Jax house of ribs has the best ribs and beans I have ever had. highly recommended. a must try. Jax House of Ribs is located at 5401 Powerline Road, across from the new BJ's Wholesale

Ft. Myers:
I recently visited Ft. Myers to attend college orientation with my son. Yea! Anyway, I stopped for lunch at Shane's Rib Shack. The pulled pork had shredded pork along with some pieces of bark cooked just right and the ribs were tender and tasty. Shane also had several sauces for dipping. I particularly liked the hot barbecue sauce. Their green beans on the side were the best I've ever had and much to my liking everything was served temperature hot. I visited the location at 9908 Gulf Coast Main Street, Ft. Myers FL. Located in the Gulf Coast Town Center. They have 11 locations in Florida. Their phone # 239-489-1135.
Gulf Breeze:
Billy Bob's BBQ, Hwy 98 at Harbourtown, Gulf Breeze FL... very good pork and chicken BBQ with good vinegar based sauces; coleslaw mediocre (haven't tried beef) atmosphere typical new family restaurant on the block. Favorite of locals from Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, especially catering for family or professional groups.
Gulfport:
Smoking Joe's. This is a real Florida BBQ joint putting out good BBQ. They are a drive thru joint and are open everyday except Monday. They serve pulled pork, pulled beef, ribs, chicken, turkey legs and also smoked Mullet.If you go try the Rib dog, it is two ribs on a hotdog bun. And a must is a slice of Grandma Gussie's Homemade Sweet Potato Pie. They have a great website too it is WWW.GPDTSH.com. Address is 5133 Gulfport Blvd ( 22nd Ave South)Gulfport, Fl
Homosassa:
New BBQ in Homosassa called Hog Pound. Its at 7449 W Grover Cleveland Blvd. Its about time....the best southern bbq Ive ever ate in Homossasa!
Inverness:
A. L. Evans Bar-B-Q on Highway 41 South, Inverness. Only open Thursday - Sunday, this place is a real find! Talked with the owner and he said they mostly deliver around town and cater wherever! Mouth-watering ribs, chicken, and sandwiches. They also make their own jerky! For those interested, here's the phone number, 352-637-5825. If you are in Citrus county, don't miss it!
Jacksonville:
One that I fully endorse is Billy C's Cottens (correct spelling) BBQ. It's been there for about 50 years. Real hole in the wall joint with a real real brick pit. They are at 17th and Main. They have a thin mustard based sauce that will knock your socks off. Let 'em know your a first timer and they'll let ya sample a rib. Very nice people.

Sticky Fingers in Atlantic Beach is a good bet. Also, there is a little place called Cliffords on Timuaquana Rd. on the westside.

Go to Black Jacks on San Juan Avenue. That's in the West side of Jax. Real Good Q.

There are a few such a Woody's that isn't too bad and the original Lou Bono's on Beach Blvd closer to downtown and Willards on Beach Blvd east of Southside Blvd.

The place I like best is Jenkins... one on king street ..other one by the bus station downtown ... it is a little hole in the wall but is good ... ... mustard based sauce is good ...

I was looking through your list of Jacksonville BBQ joints and was surprised not to see two of the best. The first is Mojo BBQ on University Blvd. right before San Jose Blvd. They have huge portions of pulled pork and every side you can imagine. The other is called Down South BBQ and it is at 830 AIA north in Ponte Vedra. It is kind of a small place but it has great pulled pork and some great sauces as well. You should definitely check both of them out.

You need to try Toby's Barbecue on New Berlin Road in the northside of Jacksonville. they have great ribs and the original barbecue potato. it is awesome. they have been there 15 years and cater for a lot of companies in jax. great food, friendly service and country atmosphere. you haven't had barbecue until you had a bbq potato.

Keys:
In the middle Keys - Porky's Bayside BBQ next door to the famous 7 Mile Grill.
Lake Mary:
Kellers in Lake Mary and Longwood

Keller's Bar-b-q: 3893 Lake Emma Road, Lake Mary; 407-333-1444; 280 S. State Road 434, Altamonte Springs; 407-786-7750. Good ribs from one of the fellows who helped start up O'Boys -- and whose father founded Fat Boy's Bar-b-q.

Land O Lakes:
Hungry Harrys - Lightning fast. They move a lot of meat here and it is served hot! Ribs, chicken, chopped beef and pork are the main selections. Sides include collards, green beans, bbq beans, slaw, homemade potato salad and corn on the cob. No fries! Top it off with cobblers or homemade peanut butter pie in chocolate or vanilla. They serve the best tea I’ve ever had!
Largo:
Big Daddy’s BBQ 12682 Starkey Rd, Largo FL 33773 – 727-518-2797 On Starkey Rd, ¼ mile south of Ulmerton. It’s the newest place in town but sure doesn’t taste like it. It’s the best pulled pork I’ve ever eatin and the ribs are the real deal. The bonus to this little find is they deliver!!!
Lutz:
Hot Rods - What looks like a run down shack contains a country store with all kinds of crazy redneck gifts. Rod serves up a Cajun inspired menu that is almost as whacky. Bat wings, yard bird, garlic stuffed steaks, mullet, turkey legs and wings in a hot tub are just a few (availability varies). Cornbread pudding is one of the delicious sides that you can wash down with a signature swamp water soft drink . The service is slow but it is a great place to take out of town guests for a relaxing novelty visit. They make a hamburger that will feed six.
Miami:
I have been enjoying eating at Shorty's Bar BQ, 9200 S. Dixie Hwy, Miami since the 1950s. They have 3 other locations in the Miami, Ft Lauderdale areas. Their website is www.shortys.com which offers discount coupons. Their food is delicious, the restaurants are clean, the wait staff friendly and the food is reasonably priced.
Shorty's Bar-B-Q, 9200 S. Dixie Highway, South Miami. If you're going to Shorty's, you owe it to yourself to visit the original location in South Miami where you sit at long communal picnic tables. Specialties include ribs and chicken barbecue beans.

Bulldog Barbecue, 15400 Biscayne Blvd., North Miami. It offers everything from ribs to brisket, but I'm an even bigger fan of the chicken. If you loved Kraft mac and cheese as a kid, you're going to love this version.

City Bar-B-Que Place, 1901 N.E. 163rd St., North Miami Beach. If country decor isn't your style, City Bar B Que is what you're looking for. And the prices are incredible: $8.95 for a half-rack of ribs, $5.95 for a pulled pork sandwich with fries and coleslaw.

Minneola:
Jack's Barbeque: 100 S. U.S. Highway 27, Minneola; 352-394-2673. If you're up for a drive, you'll find some of the tastiest barbecue in Central Florida at this tiny shack. Try the ribs or maybe a pork sandwich.
Naples:
Rib City in North Naples on US 41 is a local place now expanding into franchises out of Florida and across the country, with two restaurants recently opened in Colorado and according to the waitress, one in Alabama. More about their history here: Click here. The take-out ribs were really good, but for reasons unknown, the garlic bread and fries were soggy. Stick with the baked beans, corn coblette and coleslaw as sides, as all those were delicious.
Navarre:
Dirt Road Cookers 6900 Navarre Parkway Navarre, FL 32566

East River Smokehouse on Hwy 87. Not great bbq but good for the price.

East River Smokehouse, Hwy 87 (south end near Hwy 98)... excellent smoked pork BBQ, reminds me of Tenn. mountains; decent sauces (haven't tried beef BBQ or chicken); good baked beans; coleslaw more mayonnaise than I prefer, atmosphere rustic, more like ole timey Smokey Mountain place with pool tables, country music, etc.

Orlando:
Smokey Bones near the Fashion Square Mall has pulled pork and ribs that are almost as good as they make in competition.

Smokey Bones, one of the newest in Orlando's lineup of Q spots is another of the Darden Restaurant Chain. They do their Q the way it should be done, low and slow. Their competition team is one to be reckoned with and many of the same methods are used in the restaurant that is used on the competition circuit. The ribs are smoky and sweet and the pulled pork melts in your mouth. With three locations around Orlando It's definitely the place to try for good barbecue.

Cecil's Texas Style Barbecue is another great place for Q. Their pork sandwiches are made with slow smoked pork loin and are plenty for a healthy appetite. They claim they smoke their briskets 18-22 hours and believe me they are tender and tasty. Along with smoked sausage and smoked turkey is a hot line of vegetables to load up on. Free soft serve ice cream when you finish if you can hold it.

Uncle Jones BBQ located on SR 436 just west of 17-92 about 500 yards on the south side of 436. They have a full menu butt most have the buffet rib's, pork, chicken and ALL the trimins tater's, green's, string bean's butter beans the list goes on. NO GAS here the Q is cooked slow with oak, not a fancy place just a real good BBQ joint.

One of the newcomers is Blackwater Bar-b-q, which recently set up its smokers in a small strip mall next door to Le Coq au Vin. Blackwater opens with the bragging rights that its ribs placed fifth out of 107 contestants at Memphis in May, a barbecue competition held in Memphis. In May. I liked most everything I sampled at Blackwater. The pulled pork was especially good, moist and tender with a taste of smoke that made extra sauce superfluous. And the baby back and St. Louis-style ribs were pretty tasty too. I especially liked the spiciness of the dry rub on the ribs. Blackwater Bar-b-q is at 4718 S. Orange Ave., Orlando. The hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Beer and wine are available, and you can use credit cards. The phone number is 407-888-2033.

I stopped by O'Boys Real Smoked Bar-b-q's newest location. The boys moved down Colonial Drive to the corner of Edgewater Drive and took over a former Steak and Ale restaurant. The new space gives them a lot more room, and the bar now serves full liquor. When I went in for 'cue recently, I was shown to a rustic booth (think woodshed) in the bar area. We're basically talking about planks of wood slapped together, and not very thoughtfully. The bench was so high and uncomfortable to sit on that I got up and moved to the bar so I could sit on a stool. My feet still didn't touch the floor, but at least I was able to regain circulation in my legs.

There's another O'Boys in Winter Park located near the RR tracks on Fairbanks, where Fairbanks and Orange Avenue split (or merge, depending on which direction you're going!). They moved from the Morse Blvd. location a few years ago. The wait-staff never bother to give my co-worker and me menus - we have standing orders for center-cut rib lunches, and we're rarely disappointed.

There's a new Cecil's Texas Style BBQ in town. You may be familiar with the one at 2800 S. Orange Ave., Orlando, which has been there for a number of years. Now there's one at 5320 Alloway St., just north of Lee Road and west of Interstate 4. But this new place is a franchise -- the first, so the owners tell the Hound. For those of you unfamiliar with Texas-style barbecue, the thing to have here is brisket. Sausages are also popular with Texas 'cue, although you'll still find ribs and chicken too. But brisket is a must if you're doing that Texas thing.

Wildsides: 700 E. Washington St., Orlando; 407-872-8665. The winner of the 2002 Critic's Foodie Award. The ribs are big, fat and fatty -- just the way I like them. But the pulled pork is pretty tasty too.

Concha Me Crazy: 191 E. Pine St., Orlando; 407-246-0011. Although he no longer serves diners at his West Colonial Drive Smokehouse, Johnny Rivers provides his barbecue to a number of area restaurants, including his own Concha Me Crazy in the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown. The pulled pork is his forte, and the sweet sauce is what makes it so special. You can also get some of this great 'cue at one of the Johnny Rivers Smokehouse stands at Orlando International Airport to take on your next flight. Beats a bag of peanuts.

Smokey Bones BBQ and Sports Bar: 303 N. Alafaya Trail, Orlando; 407-248-2009. The ribs at this fast-growing chain don't do much for me, but during a recent visit to the Waterford Lakes location, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pulled pork. Good stuff.

Bubbalou's Bodacious BBQ: 12100 Alafaya Trail, Orlando; 407-423-1212. As I've reported in the past -- most recently when a new location opened in Altamonte Springs -- things have slipped at Bubbalou's over the years. But a recent visit to the east Orlando restaurant showed that there may be a renewed concentration on producing good 'cue. The ribs weren't as tender as I'd like, but the pulled pork and chicken were nice.

Conway's BBQ: 3418 S. Conway Road, Orlando; 407-382-7172. This little shop has been growing quite a bit the last few years. I like the setting of this location, and I prefer their barbecue served as a sandwich.

Ormond Beach:
Dustin's in Ormond Beach on SR 40 just East of I-95, and Port Orange on Dunlaughton just East of I-95. Outstanding pork sandwiches. Ribs are very tasty.
Pensacola:
Huggins Grocery on 12th Avenue. It's not a restaurant but they cook and sell ribs and butts on a smoker out back. Their meat is awesome!

King's BBQ, 2120 N. Palafox,... one man operation, good chopped beef or pork BBQ; not much selection... good prices, for take out only - no eat in capabilities, picnic table out front near hot asphalt main thoroughfare.

Pine Hills:
The Barbecue Shack in Pine Hills has been named No. 1 in the area a couple of times. Their pork sandwich is one of the best around. All you can eat specials change from night to night. Usually the first plateful is enough for most people.
Plant City:
Even with the windows up, you can smell Smokin' Joe's long before you see the piles of split logs and the big silver smoker beside Rick's Custom Meats on County Road 39. Perhaps it is the aroma of chicken, pork, beef and ribs mingled with smoldering oak, hickory, pecan and mesquite. Or maybe it's the promise of "Old Fashioned Quality and Service" emblazoned on the front window of the little brick store. For whatever reason, people have discovered this spot in the road between Lithia-Pinecrest Road and the county park at Alderman's Ford. 10252 County Road 39 South, Lithia OPEN: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday
Safety Harbor:
In a small, quaint tucked away town in Pinellas county named Safety Harbor, there is "Brady's Backyard BBQ." It will be 2 years old this month and is family run. The style of BBQ is a cold smoke with a dry rub. They do not sauce any meats but do have different sauces available. All the sides are homemade and NOTHING is fried; no fillers. The owners prefer to fill you up with smoked meat versus french fries or garlic toast :) They have a nice selection of wine and beers and the best sweet tea around. Smoking area is available and cigars are welcome at part of the outside area! Children are loved and welcomed and everyone feels like part of the family by the time you leave.

I thought this place was fantastic! It is nothing fancy, down to earth, just plain old good and inexpensive. It’s a good place to stop as you make your way to Ocala from the east coast on SR 40. I have no vested interest in the place. I just think it’s good. Stop by if you have a chance I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Tallahassee:
Gertie's BBQ on Crawfordville Rd. Great ribs. Great smoky flavor. They say they use a mix of Oak, Hickory and Cherry. Family run. I felt like I was eating in someone's house. Ice tea and Lemonaid are free when you eat in. Coleslaw was with a bit of mayo and sprinkeled with raisons.
Tampa:
Jimbos on Kennedy Blvd in Tampa has just about the best in home style cooked bbq in the city

Leroy Selmon's on Boy-Scout Road in Tampa serves somes GOOD Q.(RIBS).Lots of down home southern Grocery's.

Aunt Flossies - This is a no nonsense joint in the middle of an industrial area. The food goes from grill to plate and you better give any special instructions loud and fast. It is hot inside but the food is great and reasonably priced for the blue collar lunch crowd. You can mix any meats you want on the combo platter.

Louis' BBQ on US1 in Titusville. A very popular roadhouse with huge portions and a decent brunswick stew.

Victorio's Restaurant. Also on US1 in Titusville. Great Catfish...

Winter Park:
Bubba Lou's Bodacious BBQ on Lee Road (With a name like that no comment needed)

Bubba Lou's Bodacious BBQ with two locations in Winter Park and Orlando is one of the old favorites around O'Town. They serve pork, pork ribs, beef brisket, lamb, chicken and probably a couple more things I haven't mentioned. Standing in line to order doesn't seem to deter the diehard fans that keep on coming back.

O-Boys is on Morse Blvd in Winter Park, South side of the street about 3 blocks east of the Amtrak station. Go up 17-92 until you hit Morse, turn East (cool idea since it dead-ends into 17-92) and look for it on your right. Hope you enjoy it!

Yalaha:
Check out BC's General Store in Yalaha (South of Leesburg on County Road 48--East of I-75). Terrific Ribs, chopped pork and chicken, homemade BBQ beans, homemade coleslaw. BC's is an old country store (1925) and former post office now filled with all sorts of memorabilia. It is like a walk in the past. The grills are out front. There's no air conditioning (or heat except for an old pot-bellied stove). Good food and a fun place. Featured in Southern Living Magazine's Ultimate Guide to Bar-B-Que. Try it!
